E) leaders outside of the pool is there to block your opponents "attempt" action to do anything when it is their turn, if it doesn't say "attempt" on their action cards, you can't block them. Regarding Twilight Imperium, it is my favourite game, and I don't expect anything to dethrone it. Based on how the events unfold and what your opponent does, you can tell new and fun stories around delivering the ring to Mordor, or finding it. I've played this once, and we had an 'arbiter' who knew the game well guiding us through the rules. You can do it, but it's a lot easier if you already know the basics of how it goes. Empires of the Void II has a terrible rulebook and 2p is not great, but it does area majority in space much better. Pros: The mechanics look fun as heck. I highly recommend both, but for me if I had to choose between them, it'd be War of the Ring simply because I love the theme and lore. FFG rulebooks are garbage. It is much simpler than the components make it look! What is you and your wife's usual games? Meanwhile Rebellion is the classic FFG show where the expansion is very much required for it to be a great game (it fixes combat and gives variety). I confied myself of buying all of the expansions since some of you pointed out they add a lot to the game and we should play the base game first.

Star Wars: Empire vs. Rebellion. So the focus is on both simulation and, for lack of a better term, "historicity." I would love to read what you guys think of my silly situation and I want to say thanks in advance! The Empire will have had to made some pretty bad choices to lose as you describe.

Essentially think of this game, where each leader is a worker. Some of the coolest things you can do in the game fit so well in with the theme and enjoying it just ups the fun factor.
Partially because the game is more sandboxy.
Rebellion is a great game that I love, but I love the theme, without being at least a partial star wars fanboy the game is merely just okay. Trying to accomplish the objective cards the rebels have is fun since it takes planning and is rewarding when you accomplish one since it helps their victory cause that much.
I haven't played a proper game of War of the Ring, so I can't give much of an informed opinion about it, but I can see where the game's art can be called into question, even for its age.
It won't work 2p. I would say if you are able to get people together to play twilight imperium then go with that there is tones of variability and the game plays really well. Combat is very simple, which I like. EDIT: Got a lot of responses, and I’ve read them all but can’t reply to them all!
The expansion supposedly helps with combat, so we are not playing it again till we purchase that.

Any rules clarification you need, you can google e.g. It will seem daunting, but it's actually pretty straightforward, with these thematic games, quite a few small rules and exceptions, if you to go boardgamegeek, you will find in the files section plenty of good files to help ease you into the game. The thing is the 3 of them have downsides and pros that are somewhat considerable for me and my game partner (my gf who I play the most with) so we are having trouble deciding because we have never played those games. Both War of the Ring and Rebellion are excellent choices. We watched all of RTFM videos since it seemed he has a similar taste to us (he also has videos of Root and Spirit Island and we love those). I thought of buying Journeys in Middle-Earth but using an app to play wasn't very attractive to us.
As you can tell, the Galactic Civil War is a popular topic for Star Wars board games, possibly because many fans don’t have a huge amount of goodwill for the prequels and the latest trilogy has yet to receive its own decent dedicated board game.

You'll stand up during dice rolls. Rebellion is a tighter design, but it also takes a long time.
However it is a higher player count game and if you can’t get people together enough to get your money’s worth then got with war of the ring it is a little harder to pick up at first but it feels more like you are telling the story of the lord of the rings in your eyes as you go and if you really play 1v1 often it is the perfect game to get since if you play the same side over and over you can get really good and compete over it.
It delivers on the promise of being given a big LoTR toybox and smashing them into your opponent.
I was engrossed just in his explanation of thr game. Is a lot of cat and mouse with actual characters, which is very cool. You want to be reading the Learn to Play, NOT the Rules Reference.
The Rebellion rulebook is actually really good and concise. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. Felt like we got nowhere and couldn’t figure out where to even start. It's not unusual to take that long at all. A small bummer since I can't help myself but to buy everything of a game that I like.
In most games, the Rebels will have to complete some objectives to win. I think Twilight Imperium will be a future purchase but I first need to gather the people who will commit to play.
I ask because the Learn to Play says to not play with action cards, but you are playing with them (They are only used to gain more workers for the first four turns in the learn to play version).
And at no point will the actions feel tedious and like you are just going through the motions. Also, and I feel this same way about TI4, the combat is too fiddly and the rest of the game is plagued by Fantasy Flight's flawed approach to thematic game design.
