We see a LOT of theatre and it's rare to see something so powerfully moving such as what we saw there. Wonderful staff, very clean and very well kept (opinion based on the bathrooms of course). Very cool space uptown in harlem just a few blocks from the #2 train at 125th street.

At the end of the play, they always do a question and answer with the play-write and actors. I have yet to see a play here yet but I did take a tour of the venue and you can feel the history permiatting throughout.
The readings are open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 for admission and totally worth it to support such a unique venue and performance.
While Grant tends to favor well-known crowd-pleasers, he also revives more obscure shows like Jamaica, an all-black musical that hadn't been seen in New York since it closed on Broadway 60 years ago. NBT was founded in 1968 by the late Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, an award winning, visionary artist and entrepreneur. With a distinguished 46 year-old history of innovative work in its community, NBT is among the oldest Black Theaters in the country, and amongst the longest owned and operated by a woman of color. This place is such a gem. Something we only found out about this past weekend is the National Black Theatre [NBT] in Harlem. Learn more. It was such a moving experience, I throughly enjoyed myself. We went to see 'Un-Tamed: Hair Body Attidude', several short plays written and directed by black women in celebration of Women's History Month. That was a niiiice touch. The theatre is located only block from the 2,3 subway line at 125th so it's easy to get to.

Former Broadway performer Keith Lee Grant founded HRT in 2004 to bring affordable professional theatre to the neighborhood. Since 2007, the troupe has partnered with Castillo Theatre to mount shows, and although the output has slowed somewhat, recent productions such as Freight: The Five Incarnations of Abel Green and 2018's Harriet's Return: Based Upon the Legendary Life of Harriet Tubman have been well-received. Founded in 1968 by the late actor-dancer Barbara Ann Teer and now run by her daughter Sade Lythcott, NBT is a venerable Harlem institution with a mission to create a new African-American canon outside of the white mainstream, and to heal and uplift the black community through the performing arts.

This is a beautiful space that is deceptive from the outside. I recently went to (and loved) KEEP SOUL ALIVE MONDAYS Reading Series which is a short developmental lab for Black playwrights to showcase new works every second Monday of the month, except December. The instructors make it fun.
She has worked with several NYC-based theatre companies and is currently a Core Company Member with Everyday Inferno Theatre.
Definitely a place to visit when in Harlem.
