You could have received 0 coins instead, if by chance you had already defended a different gym on the day you were kicked out. A week is only long for a big town/city. I can't help but laugh when people throw their top blissy or dragonite in a remote gym and then complain on this sub that it is still there. Or maybe it's a deliberate choice that a single Pokemon can only earn up to 50 coins regardless of total time spent defending.
