(Roland Cassard(Marc Michel) who was a character in Jacques Demy's Lola(1961) makes a return appearance here. The film is a joy to watch, not just for the plot, which is gripping, but also for the superb performances of the actors, Deneuve and Belmondo. I like this movie despite its many flaws and would cautiously recommend it.

Most of the movie places us in France after Louis has found her and accepted her as Marion Vergano. This film looks like a mainstream film, but it is nothing of the kind. Hitch's trademarks were his incredibly well-framed shots, which revealed and concealed with precision, and deft camera movement.
The Supplements: Digging Into the Good Stuff. Francois Truffaut's 'Mississippi Mermaid' is a quietly absorbing noir drama steeped in dark romance and French New Wave style. A 10 all the way, and I repeat 10 to kick myself for not seeing it was one of the greatest film made the first time around. This is an excellent film about the idealism of youth as compared to the compromises of being a grown up. At least, not at first… especially if the bride and groom in question happen to be complete strangers… and one of them just might be a killer. Truffaut knows exactly what it is and the ideal and the pursuit of the ideal is often to be seen in his work, even in the three way love affair in ' Jules et Jim '.

Modest yet fitting, the mix works well with the content. I think this works well in the Antonin Doinel films, which are more about character than plot, but it falls flat in this noir-ish snore.

This movie feels a bit like 'Truffaut doing Hitchcock', which has its good points and bad points. My second viewing astonished me, and I asked myself what I thought I had seen before. This agreeable French movie deals about a millionaire owner of a tobacco factory on an African island nearly to Madagascar named Louis(Jean Paul Belmondo). This is one of the best films I've seen in the last years.Belmonndo and Deneuve shine in their respective roles, he as a naive plantation owner and she as an enigmatic trickster.Words won't do this masterpiece justice,suffice it to say that this is a movie that explores the darker side of love and the pain,humiliation and capacity for self-delusion that go with it, although it's dressed as a film noir. Like most of the company's releases, the disc is a limited edition with a run of 3,000 copies.

Infusing the proceedings with a few trademark splashes of French New Wave style, director Francois Truffaut crafts a stimulating aesthetic that uses its more overt flourishes in moderation. Love is An Illusion, But a Grand Illusion, Romantic and suspenseful drama well realized by Truffaut in his own directorial style, The bones are here for a nice, nasty tale of self-destructive obsession, but then there's all that stuff about finding true love. Long takes with slowly reframing shots help to gradually draw out the story's sense of suspense, while more formalistic techniques like freeze frames and jump cuts help to manipulate the pace even further. Mississippi Mermaid will keep you guessing about who genuinely casts the spell. Forget that feeble remake with Jolie and Banderas, see the genuine artticle instead and treat yourselves to some moments of great cinematic beauty. Though the soundstage is relatively restrained, there is some decent atmosphere (particularly in the island scenes) and Marcel Berbert's score comes through with solid, albeit occasionally strained, fidelity.
