Flint wants to prove himself to be a great scientist and inventor; so in order to bring more variety of food to the town Flint creates a machine that turns water into food. With most other book to movie adaptations, the main story line and overall feel remains intact, but this is not the case for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the movie. Tweet Love the original picture book, loved the snarky but heartfelt movie translation, we even loved the fun little CG world the animators created. I was very excited to hear that a film adaptation of the book was being made and could not wait to see it. The movie is enjoyable to watch and has an entertainment value, but I am disappointed that it wasn’t more like the book. 2

He tells the children how pleasant life in the town was because everyone got their food from the sky and did not have to go grocery shopping or cook.

His machine accidentally shoots up into the sky and in turn starts raining down food upon the town. It may not be this year's best animated movie - that honour goes to Pixar's Up - but it certainly is better than the likes of Monsters vs. Aliens. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is one of my favorite childhood stories about the fictional town of Chewandswallow where it rains food.

First the characters in the book and movie are very different.

Good comparison between the book and the movie! The Rialto Cinema is playing Duck Soup and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Many people may not have enjoyed the film as much as I have because it is very different from the book, however I believe that the movie is fun and creative and came up with the cause of the strange weather of Chewandswallow. Overall, I love both the book and the movie respectively.

The townspeople and the overly greedy mayor fall in love with Flint's invention making it a success and the town a tourist destination, with the new name of Chewandswallow.

I love your animations. The book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a story within a story as the Grandfather is telling a bedtime story to his grandchildren about the town of Chewandswallow. After reading, your students can select a wild weather, write a weather report, draw the scene on a TV screen, and create a kid reporter to tie it all together. Great job, Julie! However, the weather that they used to love turned against them, with the food storms becoming violent and uncontrollable with tomato tornadoes, floods of maple syrup, and giant meatballs. I enjoy both of them, the movie for its humor, and the book for its whimsical aspects and nostalgic feel. The film tells the story of Flint Lockwood (voice of Bill Hader), a young inventor who dreams of, someday, creating something that will be loved by everyone and make him more popular and, most importantly, improve the lives of everyone in town. This is kind of a carefully composed look into the life of a fantasy - from inspiration to realization, and then recognition of the negative end of things and finally acceptance of the way things really are and the understanding of the importance of that fantasy in reality. Eventually the town became too dangerous to live in and the citizens of Chewandswallow had to escape on boats made out of huge sandwiches and when they found a new community to live in they finally had to learn how to shop for and cook their own food. Book vs. Movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is one of my favorite childhood stories about the fictional town of Chewandswallow where it rains food. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the movie.

It's not difficult to see why it has had such long-lasting appeal. I was very excited to hear that a film adaptation of the book was being made and could not wait to see it.

Ideas quickly come into view and are just as quickly discarded in the rush of the plot. Like any good picture book, there's always something more that a reader might not have noticed that can be seen on subsequent readings.

The mayor and the townspeople of Chewandswallow continue to demand that Flint create the food the desire despite the fact the machine is slowly becoming overloaded and making the food larger and increasingly dangerous.

So, naturally I was ecstatic to watch the movie as well! The really clever thing here are the food references packed into the corners of Chewandswallow illustrations. Your animations are great and I love the topic you chose. The town's daily paper is called The Digest.

Book vs. Movie: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs By Russ Bickerstaff September 22, 2009 New at BOP: Friday Box Office Analysis? Another big difference between the movie and book was the name of the town.   If Pixar are the modern equivalent of the sweet artistry of Walt Disney's best, then Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is the slightly-skewy offspring of Chuck Jones and his Warner Bros. cartoons.

The only real problem here is the book's lack of volume. While the book is a classic, the film adaptation is a funny, creative, and modern take on that classic that anyone will enjoy. The illustrations are heavily rendered with hatching and cross-hatching, lovingly embellishing the story with a staggering level of detail. This does have the effect of engaging the imagination, but there's a bit of a wistful desire to see more - and that's just a bit less than satisfying. The level of detail is remarkable. The artwork may look distinctly ‘70's in style and execution, but when the book travels to the Grandfather's story, the styles, fashions and architecture are pretty firmly panted in the late ‘50s/early ‘60s. HAHA! In the film version, it is not about the grandfather telling the story to his grandchildren but about an inventor named Flint Lockwood, who lives in a town called Swallow Falls where just about the only thing they can eat is sardines. We loved Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs loved it. The end of the movie is similar to the book in which the food becomes too dangerous and Flint and his sidekicks, weather girl Sam Sparks and Steve the Monkey, rush to shut down the machine and everyone from Chewandswallow flee the town by making boats out of sandwiches.
