With each novel she has written, I have fallen even more in love, not with just her words but with her ability to weave together stories where sadness and hope, magic and reality meet as though they were two sides of the same coin. Unfortunately, the things that I didn't like were things that I abhorred. This is for you. Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2019. Their families made a pact or maybe they were cursed by the swans a long time ago, what happened really, now it has been lost.

It will immerse you in a fall wonderland filled with quirky and complex characters that you’ll never want to leave. This allowed McLemore to tell this story from multiple angles while keeping my attention because each chapter changed the narrator between four characters. Anna-Marie McLemore weaves a world you can’t help but get swept away in. It's a long tradition, a pain their family carries. Blanca is pale and graceful while Roja is dark and angry. McLemore’s fans will be delighted to dive back into her lush, poetic prose and revel in the nuanced composition of her characters and their relationships as they learn to navigate a world in which they must constantly overcome stifling expectations and damaging stereotypes in order to protect their identities and their hearts. The biggest lie of all is the story you think you already know. I know that’s a mouthful, but I have to mention the magical realism aspect because it’s what tends to turn off some readers because they can be frustratingly vague with the “rules” of magic. If magical realism is not your thing, just stop now while you ahead because this book, like many others in that category, will frustrate you.

It was also a fairy tale retelling, taking the basic premises of Snow White and Rose Red and Swan Lake and  creating a beautifully written tale set in the real world with some bits of magic and weirdness. Who would become a swan?

While this isn’t my absolute favorite McLemore novel because I wish I felt more connected to Blanca and Roja, I did enjoy it immensely. If you are looking for an atmospheric, magical, eery, and diverse fantasy novel, Blanca y Roja is the novel for you. There was so much that I learned from it and so much that I liked about it. But what their families know is that the swans will come and they will take one of the sisters away; one will become a swan, never to return, and one will stay behind. This book book is told in 4 alternating points of view – Blanca, Roja, Page, and Yearling. I finished this audiobook 4 days into 2019 and a 5 star read! The del Cisne girls have never just been sisters; they’re also rivals, Blanca as obedient and graceful as Roja is vicious and manipulative. With each novel she has written, I have fallen even more in love, not with just her words but with her ability to weave together stories where sadness and hope, magic and reality meet as though they were two sides of the same coin. Blanca, with her fair-skin and blondish hair, is the good sister, loved by all the señoras. Blanca and Roja was a beautiful YA magical realism fairy tale retelling. But 2 local boys are drawn into their world. But the swans are not to be cheated and when two boys disappear into the woods, they are inexplicable lured into a story that could break both them and the de Cisne sisters.

My Review. The representation in this story blew me away. A beautiful, magical, book. The del Cisne girls have never just been sisters; they’re also rivals, Blanca as obedient and graceful as Roja is vicious and manipulative.

Things, however, get complicated when two boys get intertwined in this dangerous game. This is as gorgeous, moving, and clear-sighted a novel as one could hope to read at any age. They know that, one day, the swans will pull them into a dangerous game that will leave one of them a girl, and trap the other in the body of a swan.
