Is Destination Moon the forerunner of all science fiction films? Say, Doc, the ship's about ready to take off, isn't she? Add Your Vote Now! Film data from TMDb. 1950 had two science fiction films that year, Rocketship X-M and Destination Moon. Pichel’s film offers less of a story and more of an illustration of how space travel might have looked, physically felt, and been reasoned through based on the scientific knowledge and cultural constructs of the time. Not my favorite, or even up to ranks with his other works of 1953's 'War of the Worlds' or 1960's 'Time Machine' (my personal fav), but still an early work of his that still brings the colorful magic of science fiction fantasy. Considering this film was made in 1950, way before space travel, there was quite a bit of truth in it, unlike those that come after, and the views from space are quite spectacular as well as the panoramic view of the moon surface made possible by Chesley Bonestell and the art department. I liked the spacewalk scene, the moon stuff, and the bizarre Woody Woodpecker educational cartoon. It posits the ability to go to the Moon 19 years before it happened. Destination Moon. Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi, After their latest rocket fails, Dr. Charles Cargraves and retired General Thayer have to start over again. What an elegant and timeless design! There are no aliens, no monsters, and no hot women. I was hoping for an early special effects extravaganza.

Directed by Irving Pichel, Walter Lantz, Dick Lundy. It's a bit of a slog. It’s one of the campiest things I’ve ever seen, but a lot of the conceptual stuff holds up really well. Based on a Robert Heinlein novel and produced by George Pal- the science is played very seriously with no aliens or "men in the moon.". There are lots of details that Heinlein got correct, which really, is quite amazing. Starring: Dick Wesson, Tom Powers, Warner Anderson, John Archer. Despite looking like a massive version of a Von Braun rocket from WWII, the speculation about the problems faced by the engineers and crew of such a product are surprisingly accurate and must have been fascinating viewing back in 1950. He's here to get the audience up to speed on what a trip to the moon would entail and within the story itself to explain that very same thing to a group of industrialists as part of a pitch to get them to fund the trip because American Industry, not the government, has got all the best brains and the resources….

Which Space Expedition Crew Would You Join? , When Cargraves and Thayer are watching the launch of the satellite at the beginning, they are looking out a window while facing away from the camera. Then, in one continuous take, they turn around to face the camera and walk out of the building to look at the wreckage that is now on the opposite side of the building they were in. This film, as not bad as it is, looks like so many films MST3K brutalized. How do the magnets work?- They have to have a stupid guy so that the others can explain science to him.- Why doesn't NASA have color coded space suits?- "For all mankind", they got that phrase right.- The old "holding up the Earth" gag. I will be honest: when I saw George Pal Productions I assumed there’d be some weird puppetry or something surreal beyond the special effects.
