A Saharan Desert dust plume, which has traveled thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean, has reached the Caribbean and is headed to the U.S.

Although it is not unheard of for Saharan dust to cross the Atlantic – it's a regular natural phenomenon, and a visible plume reaches the Americas every few years or so – the intensity of the current dust cloud is unusually high. Dust and water particles in the atmosphere are responsible for scattering sunlight, creating the rich colors of sunsets and sunrises.

This storm is breath-taking. A Saharan Desert dust plume, which has traveled thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean, has reached the Caribbean and is headed to the U.S. On Wednesday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the plume has spread over the Caribbean, reducing visibility in some areas to five miles.

It's even visible from the International Space Station.
