Your explination is close to the way I understand it, but not exactly. They like to use levers on the body that I don't encounter much in jiu-jitsu (like the one armed toe hold to peel the foot off from back mount, heel hooking someone's butterfly gaurd) and they're cool with doing things just because they hurt. For me, having coming from a bjj background, it really highlighted some of effective techniques/subs which most instructors don't teach in bjj. I think all modern american wrestling has some history in Catch. I would say I have gotten to a pretty high level using this.

I know it's a stupid newb question, but I always thought Severn was a greco roman wrestler, and after reading an interview where he claims shoot fighting or catch (can't remember which it was) as his primary style, I got confused. I've never trained formally with a catch Wrestler, but I like a lot of the content I see online. This was years ago before leg locks were as popular as they are now. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, people get butthurt and call that "being a dick." Wasn't Saku a catch wrestler? They tend to use the double wrist lock a lot more as well. That CSW Erik Paulson style never was considered weak. I'd be interested in learning some catch, but nowhere within 100 miles of me does it. We've had Travis Newaza out a couple times and I can feel the club grow because of it. A lot of the stuff I train is Catch and hybrid wrestling. I occasionally train with a catch guy who lives a couple hours away. I train catch and I think it's great. What passing or sweeping styles would be typical of Catch Wrestling or what about them is quite different to the BJJ equivalents? I basically abandoned all of the corny ass "brutality" moves or pain moves because they really dont work against good guys in competition. Funny enough, Saku being Japanese was known for his western style grappling, meanwhile when he fought Renzo whom was a brazillian master in Jiu Jitsu (from japan of course...).
