This year's fair is celebrating 200 years of Sir John A MacDonald and 50 years of the Canadian flag. Black history is American history, however, observing Black History Month in February gives us a chance to be intentional about learning this particular topic. While it’s wonderful to recognize the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, there are many other connections we can make to the African American community.

The Black History Awareness committee is one of the many exhibitors and we will be sharing the background on Underground Railroad quilts as well as having you help us make one. For the month of February their community art gallery will be showing works from Burlington students, black artists and the BAC's collection. Watch how one town in Mississippi worked to unite their students and bond their community together. It has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada, and more recently has been observed in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Black History Month always provides a fantastic opportunity for us to recognize the outstanding contributions people of African and Caribbean descent have made to our country over many generations.
